Coming home to Australia necessitates almost daily visits to our local beach. What bliss to leave the sonic heat, concrete and dust of Dubai for the freshness, salty air and cool Pacific oceans of Coogee.
Coogee Beach is very popular and receives a large number of visitors all year round. But it is us residents who are most proud of this stretch of the world.
The Coogee Beach Club is extremely proud of its record of no lives lost whilst Coogee Surf Life Saving Club members have been on Patrol.
The Club itself was founded in 1907 by a group of concerned locals who thought that the surf bathers needed protection from the dangers and the vagaries of the surf. Back then the Clubhouse was a wooden shack.
Coogee has always been at the forefront of Surf Life Saving. The first mass rescue, night surf carnival, shark attack and the development of the resuscitation technique all happened at Coogee. And of course this is where I learned to swim, dive under waves and of course bodysurf, in true Australiana style.
