Kingsley: 29-12-13 Sleep

Newborns sleep a lot. According to the books, I should expect Kingsley to be asleep for up to 18 hours over the course of 24 hours now, during his first few weeks of life outside my belly. But he does not snooze for more than three hours or four hours at a time, day or night, which means that Erroll and I are chronically sleep deprived. Arghh!! You see, if King is not sleeping he is demanding milk. I am definitely not getting any rest…

Sleepy King

Sleepy King

Look, I understand that this is a necessary phase for King, and that it won’t last long. His sleep cycles are far shorter than ours. He is spending more time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep: that light, easily disturbed slumber. This is par for the course of the child’s developing brain.

So by all means baby boy: sleep when you can. I sure will, too.
