Tonight Kingsley comes through the door – his father next to him, both of them drenched from their swim at Rolex Tower – bearing a gift for me. He’s found a ‘diamond’ on the ground while walking home from the pool and presents it to me, this gift of love. I thank him, putting out my hand to receive it and show him how I cherish it close to my heart. ‘I’ll put it straight into my pocket’ I let him know. Concerned I’d lose it from there Kingsley decides to store it in his buggy ‘because if the diamond falls out of your pocket you’ll be very sad, Mummà.’ The child has a point.
