Ch. 29: Fetal weight

We got ourselves a bebe the weight of a kilogram with great lungs floating in this here belly. ONE KILO ALREADY! At 26 weeks gestational age, our Seahorse is growing off the charts. In fact the average 26 week fetus weighs 760 grams. And to be sure I am feeling this extra kilo in my kangaroo pouch acutely; well, my upper back is feeling its effects. My stomach resembles the consequences of consuming – whole – a well inflated basketball.

However, today all my aches evaporated once our doctor showed Erroll and I our sleeping Seahorse, in situ…

Estimated fetal weight is a calculation of percentiles as well as the estimated fetal weights based ultrasound data and on many published formulas. Calculations are based on the 4 common fetal measurements: biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC):

Head Circumference

145

Also femur length (FL)…

Femur Length

And abdominal circumference (AC)…

In general, about 2 in 3 actual fetal weights will be about 16% +/-the average. Actual weights can often be higher or lower than the 16% +/-. In fact about 5% of babies would either be bigger (2.5%) or smaller (2.5%) than these.

Our bets are that Seahorse once December 2013 rolls around will be one big bouncy-born baby. Mini Air Jordan basketball shoes already purchased.
