Kingsley: 22-1-14 An Australian

Today our boy Kingsley is declared an Australian Citizen. Yes! The Australian Government in Canberra has bestowed upon the boy his Australian Citizenship this very sunny day marked in the calendar as 22nd January 2013. It is through the concept of citizenship by descent that our son takes possession of citizenship, for both his parents, Erroll and I, are Australian citizens.

Citizenship enables Kingsley to be part of the inclusiveness of Australian society and to fully realise his aspirations and potential, irrespective of race, gender, religion, language or place of birth (in our boy’s instance, its Dubai). Australia is a socially mobile meritocracy. Citizens have equality before the law under the rule of law, individual freedoms such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and gender equality, all enshrined in the Constitution.

And just a wee note to you, our son: as an Australian citizen you are now obliged to defend Australia should the need arise. One day you may receive a letter in the mail about that, I am sure. In the meantime, its your job to alert me to when you are hungry or tired with that beautiful mouth of yours…
