Lets begin with what takes my breath away every day: my engagement ring. The plush 1.52 carat centre solitaire is set high with four prongs gripping the stone, little metal claws bending over the edge of the transparent jewel holding it securely in place. Such a setting puts the emphasis on the diamond rather than the metal holding it. However the metal itself is a fine specimen of Chemical Element No. 78: luxurious platinum.
But it was the strapping fella who gifted it to me, the words he chose, what he wore, the champagne bottle he presented me with, the music selected, playing in background (Michael Buble, of course)…oh, and the venue where he popped the question. Talk about over-stimulated! Talk about overwhelmed!! And you know, the choice was simple for me: a yes. A heart felt and immediate Y.E.S!
“Emerald-cut diamond engagement ring, featuring 1.52 carats in a platinum setting”. That’s the answer to the questions I am asked about “the ring”. The usual round of inquiries and opinions are then debated on the merits of this cut, or that stone. To me, engagement jewels are not cocktail pieces. Classic contemporary designs are my personal favourite. I am in awe how simple, yet carefully designed settings can elevate the brilliance of a stone.
An emerald cut is absolutely stunning. Because of it’s long lines, it tends to be less fiery than a round brilliant cut, however it displays broader, more dramatic flashes of light. Its trim lines lend an elegant air to what cradles it in my case: the simplest of ring settings.
Now, after diamonds, I believe platinum is a girl’s second best friend. Why? Its stronger than most other precious metals, one of the least corrosive, in non-reactive, but also more expensive (considering its one of the rarest elements in the Earth’s crust). Oh and because it naturally gives off a silvery shine, it will keep its brilliance forever. How loyal! What credentials!! What’s not to admire in such a pal?! Shine on you Crazy Diamond…
