An Australian Backyard Garden

I’ve got a secret garden. Its tucked deep in the Australian countryside, close enough to the sea to hear crashing waves in the dead of night, and near enough to National Parks for bilbies to consider my lawn their turf. Deadly snakes make it their home and it has overgrown to the point that chaos reigns supreme along with gloriously coloured blooms and native bushes growing stout…

It is of no use to stifle its natural way. After all, Nature is never completely predictable or controllable; it always inserts chaos into the mix. In this case, its my backyard garden which is all mixed up. You see, my plants flourish but I cannot claim to know exactly how or why. To think, this, my garden, has not been tended to for eleven months. And thrive it does…

My chaotic garden thrives; its ecology is full and rich. Birds flock to eat the abundant insects and seeds. Critters visit and stay on. The top soil is dark, damp, rich like compost writhing with worms. See, Nature is never stingy. It always creates more than it needs – more seeds, more weeds, more insects. My dad, this garden’s keeper for years gone past, planted too much. But now I have enough when chaos strikes, and plenty of green gifts for friends…

About Alice

I run, I jump, I sing, I dance. Whether climbing trees, walls or stairs I do it at a clip. When out, my date is always Trusty Nikon (who never lets me down in the attire stakes; so smart in his black, with a pop of red!). Where does it lead, this love affair of mine? Well, its lead me to Dubai, via the matrimonial aisle, thanks to a gorgeous husband who whisked me from Coogee beach, Sydney into the Arabian Peninsula - to my new home, Dubai. I am a freelance writer and photographer and my wish is to snap away, to scribe and to share it all with you. Enjoy.
