Kingsley: 26-12-13 Boxing Day

Kingsley's first Boxing Day

Kingsley’s first Boxing Day

Our Boxing Day began with visits by friend Jodie bearing gifts, and thus yet another opportunity for me to dress King up in one of his newborn outfits. After all, we were receiving visitors! Today the bebe’s lamb keeps him company, and as usual, the child shakes off his bonnet.

This, the day after Christmas, is St Stephen’s Day, named in honour of Christianity’s first Martyr. In Commonwealth countries it is known as Boxing Day…

It refers to a box, and in particular what it contains: a gift (in cash or kind) that is handed to people such as postmen and tradesmen on this day, in recognition of services rendered throughout the year.

The box became the symbol of church charity and was given a permanent place in every church sanctuary. The parish priest doled out the money it contained to the needy on the day following Christmas which, for this reason, became known as Boxing Day.
