Ch. 7: Insominia

The Seahorse had me up for hours in the middle of the night; well, in the wee hours of this morning. Was the fella celebrating now that we are exactly 21 today??? That is, 21 weeks along? Time for merrymaking indeed! And Seahorse was ready to partay. Oh the hilarity…

At exactly 1AM I was woken by unusually weird and vivid dreams, a dead arm (laying on it in an attempt to sleep comfortably on my side), and the third great urge to pee (in as many hours of rest). Eyes spring open, tactical maneuver to get out of bed, shuffle to the loo, dead arm returned to its normal state of blood supply, then shuffle back to bed. Clap eyes shut. Wait for Hypnos to induce somnolence once again…

Well, the God of sleep neglected my silent pleas…

4 and a half months along

Three weeks ago already! 4 and a half months along

So what causes insomnia during pregnancy? Its a complex combination of hormones thrown in with some unfortunate conditions that does the trick: frequent urination, persistent heartburn, raging gastrointestinal track, discomfort from a heavy belly, aching back, crazy dreamscapes, leg cramps, and pre-birth anxiety.

Endless hand-wringing on whether Seahorse is still swimming and enjoying its surroundings; whether I ate well that day; did I inadvertently increase my core temperature enough to harm him? Too much exercise? Did I take my medication??? You get the picture. And I sure did: from 1 in the morning through to 4AM.

Epilogue: I finally dozed off sometime after 4:30AM, completely exhausted and delirious from listening to ‘relaxation’ music (read: ocean waves crashing on the shore); and when that didn’t help, off I took myself to the couch and IPAD. Those 3 hours had me up to date with the news of the world and B-grade celebrity gossip. Perhaps it was the antics of Kim Kardashian and her child, North West, that gave Hypnos the compassion I needed to knocked me out…
