Punk Threads

30th December 2015

Back in the ’80s when I was in high school, in my year, and above, were a few girls who seemed to me achingly hip, and with it. They wore their brown pinafore uniforms a little slouchy, their hair cut at frightening angles, and their Walkmans housed mixed tapes of musicians I had no idea existed…but intrinsically recognized I should know about.

Take for example, the punk rock band The Ramones. These American rockers defined the punk rock sound, paving the way in the mid ’70s for other bands we all have heard of: Green Day, Pearl Jam, Nirvana.

All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname “Ramone”, although none of them were related. They performed non stop concerts over 22 years. None of the four original band members are alive now, but their legacy lives on in my son, whose attitude (and ego) seems as big as the band members’.

I blame the black punk threads he chose to wear today…
