Here is a day’s worth of fun for the little man: baking cake with JiaJia, cheekily picking at it before we let it rest in the breeze, enjoying holding the cake then eating a slice of it with milk, and at last giving exactly half of the pound cake to our security boys downstairs, the ones who keep our building safe (and help me with heavy groceries from time to time).
Then for the very first time, allowed to go for a long walk, and a grocery shop, wearing just his shorts and undies – no nappy! The three of us walk all the way to Satwa Co-Op, crossing the air bridge and through traffic lights, via desert, a strip of grasslands, and frangipani trees, all without an accident. Next was the grocery shop which turned into a farce. Mumma Dôra mostly kept at a distance as she just could not bear Kingsley’s wild streaks, shrill screams and barefoot running. I allowed it; didn’t give a shit at the disapproving stares. But then I did care, when he pulled a stack of back-to-school bags off a large palette. And did a wee in the store. It proved almost impossible to corral him…almost.
The carrot came on the form of a ice cold frozen Bounty icecream I spotted in the fridges. He was in that pram so fast, and strapped in so tight without a fuss, the instant that the Bounty was presented. His second ever! That’s how I nabbed him today – because of that previous Bounty experience. He told me last week that he LOVED THE TASTE. I knew it was our only chance. He licked that Bounty wrapper so clean, all the while strapped in and quiet. Win.
Next Kingsley and I are approached by two young ladies. Are you Greek they asked? Why yes I am! They told me they heard a loud voice speaking Greek, and simply followed it…to us. Mumma Dôra was once again among her people. The conversation between four and a half Greeks at a grocery store in front of the cheese and olive counter was exactly as you would expect it. Animated. Son, no need for you to get used to it; you are already a part of it! Glad you enjoyed your Bounty darling.
