Kingsley: Suctioned

30th April 2014

Dear Lactation Consultant,

My son is four months and three weeks of age, nurses well, and when not nursing wants to suck pretty much all the time. I try to nurse as often as I can, even if he is not hungry, but it is impossible for me to have him at the breast 24/7. I eat meals standing up, taking a shower we do together; I cant go to the loo or talk on the phone without master Kingsley being attached to me. Cooking is out of the question. Sexy-time with Erroll seems like a distant memory. Gone are those days…

Baby Kingsley at his favourite warm spot.

The volume of milk that Kingsley takes seems to be satisfying him whenever he get hungry because he does not cry after his feeds. However he wants to nurse all the time; he just LOVES the boob and even sleeps with his mouth wrapped around a nipple. Either one will do. Every so often, after a huge feed, he ends up tugging and twisting and turning my sore and haggard nipples in a frustrated manner as he can’t get anything more out. I yelp and scald him, to no avail; the boy has suctioned the nipple and has it held ransom on the top of his hard palate. Its painful when he yanks it to and fro, and the child just wont let go. Its vacuum sealed.

Is this normal baby behaviour?

Many thanks in advance, Mumma Aliki
