39 Weeks: Love & Marriage

The Seahorse will never have the privilege of meeting its maternal grandfather, my dad Peter. Its been exactly one week since dad passed away and the toughest bit of the entire ordeal, for me, was knowing that dad would not hold Seahorse in his arms, like he did his very own three girls: me and my older sisters Marlen and Sylvia.

Mum and dad’s pairing back when they fell in love was one of pure romance and a robust meeting of minds, intellects and passions for living a full life. They also fancied the pants off each other! Both looked forward to establishing their own private careers, taking leaps of faith by travelling then settling abroad, and later on would join as one to enjoy the pleasure (and challenges) of producing a healthy family of girls. Can you imagine-girls only!

Their conjoined aim of nurturing us babies into young ladies, then into women brought up in an established, principle-centred household would, in turn, set the stage for our own desires to make a mark on the world.

Their marriage on Boxing Day was over 47 years ago. It lasted till a week ago on the promises made good by two individuals who believed that love and marriage is sacred, and the very vows uttered all those moons ago can overcome material obstacles thrown in the path to true romance and an enduring love affair.

Vale, darling dad.
