The Holy Month of Ramandan is almost upon us; mere days till piety takes priority and drives behaviours that are geared toward generosity and spreading tangible goodness all round. “Ramadan Kareem!” we all joyously greet each other with here in the Middle East. Its one way of expressing the love and respect that fellow human beings have in common, together: happiness to all people.
Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Ramadan also varies from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.
This splendid example of Islamic architecture hails from Abu Dhabi: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque glows in its white robes. It is a symbolic expression of the emotional connection all UAE citizens hold in their hearts for the father of the UAE, particularly because it also includes the burial place of the late Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan.
30 days and fasting, and 30 nights of feasting, giving generously, sharing where you can and spreading goodwill to all who cross your path. Ramadam Kareem!
