Who would have thought the simple necessity (for some) and pleasure (for most) of the ingesting of a daily breakfast meal could be fraught with so many decision points? Firstly, to eat or not to eat; that is one person’s dilemma. And if one chooses to eat, what must/should one ingest?
Do we decide upon the advise of Dr Atkin’s Diet Revolution banishing the horror movie-carb? Is it better to travel the route of the fruitarian, with their berries, bananas and nuts? How about slathering on home-made plum jam (thank you Granma Bonnie) all over warm slices of almond bread (a big thank you mum)?
Bacon & Eggs or Fruit Salad…Warm Bread & Jam? Decadent cupcake perhaps? Or just a plain cuppa tea. You choose…
Grapes wake the palate. Tea (for me) and Coffee (for him) ignites the brain. In no mood for oats or cereal, I oscillate between the blender whizzing up frozen blueberry yoghurt mash-up (me) and the non-stick pan, eggs sunnyside up with a side of baked beans on the breakfast menu (him).
Decadence and desire cross paths every now and then, and when they do, nothing will do other than a cupcake. Make that two.
My daily staple however, is tea. I won’t go without. Its a constant craving that insists on being sated. This year’s obsession comes from the lofty mountains of Yunnan province; Dabaihao jasmin tea prepared in a kiln with fresh jasmin flowers. How I thank the Chinese for their lofty teas and jasmin flowers: I thank them every single breakfast time.
But I bow my head in quiet admiration to mum the pro-baker and all-round feeder in our family. Mum belts out a tune (she can hold one, that’s for sure) as she lovingly kneeds loaves of ambrosia fit for Zeus’s pleasure. Mum’s goods smell delicious, subtle variations the lot of them – chewy sourdough, yeasty pide, fig-and-walnut slice, and this one: almond and honey loaf. Granma Bonnie – pass the jam.
Breakfast for me? Here is the news: its an apple, or a mango or pineapple, at my desk, in the office, scouring through emails. Heck, I prefer lush, sappy fruit that willingly makes me drool – all over the monitor – followed by endless cups of fragrant tea. I choose breakfast. Every glorious day. A juicy breakfast. Choose juicy!
