Who can ever ignore a beautifully decorated cake? How the sight of one enchants us all and affords endless potential for discussion points! A friend of mine exhibits extraordinary aptitude for inventing spectacular designs in cake-decorating, and each time she forges another unique arrangement, my first instinct is to capture it in digital…
This particular lass displays flair for design, finesse in interpretation, a certain deftness in execution. She is intuitive when deciphering what her audience wants in a celebration-cake, and as for artistic accomplishment, have a look yourself…
And best of all, her cakes are not stiff, pompous nor sober affairs. To the contrary – what the delighted eyes and hungry mouths receive is a playful and mischievous creation. Her name? Camilla Hassan, a.k.a The Bake Fairy.
The culinary art of cake decorating has a relatively recent history. It was only in mid-19th century that the French began to serve dessert as a separate course that furnished guests plates at the very end of their meal: a sweet way to round out the evening’s feast. It was during this era that decorated desserts – cakes – began to regularly appear on banquet tables.
But the real turning point was the development of temperature-controlled ovens in the 1840s. Baking became pleasant and convenient. Next? The introduction of baking powder and baking soda. Fast forward to 2012 and the creations here have flowers, animals, trees and jewels embedded in them.
What a way to celebrate! Celebrate with cake!
