Balancing with feet astride in an almost-filled carriage, on the metro en route home, and with afew “excuse me’s” I shuffle along to the very front to take a good look at my city. The view from up here causing me to stop: what an outstanding urban composition.
Patterns, Symmetry, Texture, Lines – any or all of these elements found within a frame will go toward creating what you’d consider a photo with composition.
A symmetrical shot with strong composition and a good point of interest leads to a striking image. Without that point of interest the image won’t move you.
Diagonal, Horizontal, Vertical, Converging – all manner of lines impact images differently. Spot the lines while framing your shot, move your feet to discover the best scenario utilizing those lines, then snap away for a really strong image.
Next consider something that normally would not “show” in photos: texture. When light hits buildings and objects at different angles, a sense of texture is manufactured. Observe how the buildings to the left and right, foreground and back are struck by light in various ways, and how that translates into the texture and feel of each building.
A successful shot attracts the eye for a while. Just as I am drawn to the city skyline of Dubai, the naturally compelling imagery of a well-composed shot will have your viewers lingering that much longer on your digital art.
